Taylor Russell McKenzie was conceived in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18th, 1994. She was also raised in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black father, and a white mom. She grew up mostly with her mom's family. She shared that when she was a kid, she was not accepted by her peers due to the complexion of her skin. They struggled financially. They were always on the move and relocated 16 times to fund her father's job. Russell stated that in spite of all the struggles it was always the possibility to reinvent and make something completely new. Russell's parents had financial difficulties and she was constantly moving. Russell was eighteen when she began her first acting class. She used her work savings to buy a car, and would then drive to Los Angeles, to audition. She would return to work after her funds ran out and then resume performing. This process continued for four years before she got her first major television role.
